Autonomous streamflow measurement systems:
Salt-dilution discharge measurement is a method in which a known mass of salt is injected upstream of a conductivity probe and the conductivity signal measured. This method of tracer method discharge measurement has been used for decades but no automated method of capturing flows is commercially available to date. This is a potentially valuable part of a hydrometric program in that is can be used to fill in gaps (poorly sampled flow regimes) in the rating curve, or capture extreme high and low flow events in a cost-effective and accurate manner. Partnering with Hydroid GeoScience Ltd. and Mr. John Fraser, ARD has developed the AutoSalt unit which is combination of control, instrumentation, logic, and a proprietary salt-injection system. Prototype units are installed at various sites in the lower mainland of British Columbia and program development is ongoing.
